When supplying the society with first-class products, SVW will endeavor to minimize the negative impact on the environment brought along by its products, activities and services. To consolidate SVW's competitiveness in environment management in auto manufacturing field, we hereby make the following rules:

1. Abide by state and local laws, regulations and other requirements on environmental protection.
2. Make unremitting efforts in continuously improving the general environment activity of SVW with the environment management system implemented.
3. While providing quality cars, gradually improve the products' compatibility with the environment, and adopts the recycling economic way of reducing raw material, reuse and recycling.
4. When designing all kinds of projects, processes, packing material, and waste disposal, measures with minimal impact on environment shall be taken, and the optimum feasible technology within budget shall be applied.
5. Reduce consumption of energy and raw material as possible as we can, and minimize natural resource consumption.
6. Gradually decrease the use of harmful materials.
7. Strive to influence our suppliers and contractors in their environment-related acts.
8. Gradually improve the environment protection consciousness and competency of all the employees.

From the establishment of Shanghai Volkswagen to April 1990, the investment for environmental protection facilities reached RMB 6.624 million yuan during the Phase I Construction of SVW. During the period from the beginning of 1992 to the end of 1994, Phase II Construction of SVW enables the annual auto production capacity reach nearly 300 thousand units, and the investment for environmental protection facilities during this phase reached 6.08 million.

In 1995, SVW established and implemented ISO9001 quality management system, which expressly specifies that products made and sold by SVW as well as the services it provided should meet the expectations of customers through continuously improved technology, and conform to the state regulations concerning environmental protection and security as well.

In December 1997, SVW was accredited ISO14001. During three years of operation, SVW was supervised and checked for four times, and passed all of them with flying colors. In May 2001, the Company passed certificate renewal check held once every three years, becoming the first enterprise in China's auto industry and that invested by VWAG in China in doing so.

SVW has implemented the environment management system since 1997, and by the end of 2001 it had set 46 environment protection goals for the company and 105 environment targets. Thanks to its goal-oriented environment management mode, SVW has effectively minimized negative impact on the environment. The major fields are as follows:
Control of pollutants: SVW completely abandons the traditional mode of “treatment after pollution” in environment management, but adopts the pollution control mode of “supervising the whole process” with the effective measures of ISO14001 environment management system. We strictly control every step of plant planning, processing and manufacturing, and treatment of wastes, and actively explore the optimum feasible technology to minimize consumption of energy and raw material.

Minimize natural resources consumption: SVW has an annual production capacity of nearly 300,000 cars and thus has considerable energy consumption. Therefore, since the establishment of environment management system, SVW always strives to minimize natural resources consumption, gradually evolves the concept of seeking for the better in production, and implements the strategy of sustainable development.
Constant improvement of the products: SVW's efforts of environment management not only focus on process and equipment improvement, but also emphasize the products. In April 1998, SVW stops using Freon as refrigerant of air conditioner in cars; Freon froth is replaced by water froth for the steering wheel and levers. SVW even developed liquefied petroleum gas car (LPG) with low pollution, which was welcomed in taxi industry. In particular, with accomplishment of the goal that car products equipped with ternary catalyze and transforming devices account for 100% of electro-spray product cars, all the cars made by SVW has met Standard II of Europe in terms of exhaust emissions.
Exert influence on all parties concerned in their environment-related activities. From 1997 to 2001, SVW had exerted influence on 32 auto parts manufacturers in the environment activities. These manufacturers attached great importance to our demands, and greatly improved the environment conditions of the enterprises through constant improvement. With the problems discovered, those enterprises adopted a series of measures including reinvesting a total of 1.6 million yuan or so in pollution treatment project, planting in the premises of the plant etc. After completion of the projects, 100% of the pollutants satisfied the environment protection requirements.
The coordinated mode between environment and economy: With the development of environment management, SVW begins combining clean production and complex use of wastes, and advocates a coordinated mode between environment and economy on the basis of constant reuse and recycling of material.
