On April 16th, the member of political bureau of CPC central committee and premier of the state council Zhu Rongji inspected SVW.

On June 19th, the 60,000th PASSAT of SVW was produced.

On September 29th, SVW won the first national quality management award.

On February 30th, the first SVW POLO car was produced.

On April 15th, the ceremony was held for that the third auto plant of SVW was put into production.

On May 12th, Jiang Zeming, the general secretary, chairman of China, and chairman of Central Military Committee inspected SVW accompanied by Huang Ju, the secretary of Shanghai municipal committee of CPC and member of political bureau of CPC Central Committee, Mayor Xu Kuangdi etc.

On May 12th, the localization rate of Santana 2000 reaching 40 percent passed authentication.

In May, SVW7183AGi and SVW7183BGi of PASSAT were recognized as the state new product of 2000 through review of experts.

On August 21st, point car in Santana 2000 series was officially launched in the market.
On November 1st, the 2000GSi-AT(automatic catch) included in Santana 2000 series was launched in the market.

On July 1st, the fourth complementary agreement of joint venture project for Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Company Ltd. was signed. RMB 2,000,000 yuan was added to the registered capital of the Company, making it reach RMB4.6 billion yuan.

On August 20th, the fifth complementary agreement of joint venture project for Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Company Ltd. was signed. Bank of China transferred its whole share under joint venture contract to Shanghai Alliance Investment Ltd., and VWAG transferred 20% of its share under the joint venture contract to Volkswagen (China) Investment Company Ltd. of F.R. Germany.

In September, SVW was chosen to be most admired foreign invested companies in China by Fortune magazine.

On October 17th, PASSAT of SVW passed the state project authentication.
On November 3rd, Germany Chancellor Schroeder visited SVW, and offered his epigraph as following, i.e., “SVW is the model of cooperation between China and Germany. I wish you all the best!”

On December 15th, PASSAT, the third generation of Santana of SVW was produced.

On March 25, SVW launched the 2000GSi Santana of 1998 in the market.

In April, SVW was awarded with the national “May 1st ” labor award.

On May 30th, the foundation ceremony for the Expansion Project of SVW technical center was held. The 800,000th car and the localization rate of Santana 2000 reaching 80 percent passed authentication.

On December 5th, SVW passed the ISO14000 authentication and review by the environment management system review center of state administration of environmental protection.

On January 16th, donation to the Hope primary schools made by SVW and its authorized service stations nationwide reached RMB2,000,000 yuan.

On April 29th, the general secretary Jiang Zeming inspected SVW accompanied by Huang Ju, the secretary of Shanghai municipal committee of CPC, Mayor Xu Kuangdi and vice Mayor Jiang Yiren.

On December 28th, the SVW Hotline for Assistance to Schooling to which SVW donated RMB2,000,000 yuan was opened.

On March 24th, the third complementary agreement of the joint venture contract of SVW was signed in Anting.

On April 20th, SVW held the celebrating meeting for its tenth anniversary and the 2nd auto plant's putting into operation. SVW had developed the production capacity of 200 thousand cars per year. The Shanghai Santana 2000 was put into mass production and launched in the market.

On June 4th, the result of the eighth poll of “Top Ten Joint Venture (Manufacturer) in China” was published. SVW was included in the list again. By then SVW had been in the list for eight consecutive years.

On November 28th, SVW held the ceremony for the production of the 500,000th Santana car and issuance of ISO9001 quality system authentication.
