When the styling design started, another team also began to work out a program for innovating the power system of Polo Jinqing. In September 2003 the power design was determined in the main. It was decided to make engine re-adaptation to Polo Jinqing on the basis of VWAG’s FSI engine following the new engine development trend in the world and to develop two types of 16 valve engine for it, the advantages of the program being its close following of the world’s trend, use of advance engine structure and substantial increase of power to a greater convenience and economy of the users.
Dynamic performance: accurate operations

Polo Jinqing inherits the traditional advantages of VW cars and maintains the dynamic functions of flexibility, free operation and great comfort of Polo brand. Equipped with 1.4 L engine, Polo Jinqing can reach a maximum speed of 172 km/h, and the 1.6L version 188km/h. The power of the car is beyond any doubt and the power for acceleration from zero km more than enough.

The smooth torque curve shows that these two types of engines are able to maintain a great torque within a wide range of rpm. In the case of 1.4L, the maximum torque can reach 130 Nm at 3750 rmp with a power rating of 55kW, while the 1.6L version can be as high as 155 Nm torque with 77kW power rating, an increase of 4.1%.A high torque at a low speed and a high power rating at a high speed directly reflect the swift starting, stable and quick acceleration, accurate operation and other advantages.

The Tiptronic 6-speed transmission and the 5-speed manual transmission of Polo Jinqing can give the engine a full play. Polo Jinqing can run fast and freely either on expressways or on city streets to the driver’s heart’s content. Some of its dynamic performances are no less excellent than some higher class or bigger displacement cars.

Good chassis of Polo Jinqing guarantees a stable drive, especially when it is running on rough roads, the car can ensure great riding comfort and high safety. When it is turning at a high speed, the car produces a strong road grip. All in all, comfort and ease of operation is what you will feel in the car.
Entirely new power train
The two types of 16 valve engine developed for Polo Jinqing on the basis of VWAG’s FSI engine inherit the advantages of 1.4 L and 1.6 L engines of Polo brand, the most prominent ones being their high torque at low speed, high power at high speed, environmentally friendliness and freedom from maintenance.
★ Features of the power train :
It incorporates into itself advanced technologies, such as the E-gas, Bosch ME 7.5.20 engine control system, noiseless camshaft driving chain, optimized manifold, easily replaceable filters, re-adapted power train, which provide Polo Jinqing with endless driving power.

E-gas technology: this can promptly coordinates and controls the car in a uniform and sensible way to meet the various needs for instant supply of torque and power (e.g. when overtaking, ASR, air conditioning, etc.), so that the engine is always in its best and most rational working range under any circumstances to reduce fuel consumption for higher drivability, stability and safety.

Bosch ME 7.5 2.0 engine control system: by collecting the various data from the reference points this system adopts advanced CAN-BUS intranet technology and enables the engine to function well under all working conditions, and raises the controlling sensitivity of the engine.

- Camshaft noiseless driving chain: to ensure a good noiseless effect free of maintenance.
- Optimized manifold: to increase the air inlet and reduce inlet resistance.
- Easily replaceable filter: only the filter cartridge is to be replaced instead of the whole oil filter
★ Advantages of the power train:
- High torque at low speed: in the case of 1.4 L engine, the highest torque only needs a speed of 3750 rpm. In the case of 1.6 L, the highest torque can be reached at 3800 rpm, the highest torque being raised by 6.9%. These two engines have the similar torque curve to that of Passat Lingyu, and they both produce an excellent acceleration at a low or middle speed, which is a prominent feature of German cars. Therefore in the cars of the same class, the power output of Polo Jinqing is considered very smooth and great.

- High power at high speed: the acceleration 0~100 km/h of the entirely new 1.4L is reduced by around 6.7%, and that of new 1.6L by as much as 17.9%. The power for starting is more than enough and the operation is highly accurate. In addition, the maximum speed of 1.6 L Polo Jinqing is raised by 4.4%, its power rating increased by 4.1%.
★ Environmentally friendliness and low fuel consumption:
EU IV is applied to the various versions to offer a better protection of the environment. The fuel consumption of the new 1.4 L Polo Jinqing at 90km/h uniform speed is reduce by 13.8% at the maximum, and the 1.6 L version by a maximum of about 8.3% at 90km/h uniform speed.
★ Maintenance free and easy service:
Adjustable inlet camshaft timing and noiseless camshaft driving chain are adopted on Polo Jinqing. The adoption of such advance technology help to cut down the maintenance and service cost. For example, it is possible to replace the filter cartridge alone, instead of the entire oil filter as before. The valve timing system is chain-driven, so that the life is much longer than using belt, which greatly reduces the frequency and expenses of vehicle maintenance for the car owners.
Transmission

The Tiptronic 6-speed transmission and the 5-speed transmission are used on Polo Jinqing. The use of Tiptronic 6-speed transmission, in particular, is the first case among the comparable cars made in China.

At present, the Tiptronic 6-speed transmission is mainly used on BMW, Audi, Poscher and some of VWAG’s de luxe cars.
★ Tiptronic 6-speed transmission
The Tiptronic technology combines the advantages of manual and automatic transmissions. It has both the strong point of simple operation of automatic transmission and that of the manual transmission on which you can shift the gear as you like, providing the driver with an experience of easy and free operation. The Tiptronic 6-speed transmission used on Polo Jinqing even has the functions of DPS and hydraulic electronic control system, with more speeds than the traditional automatic transmission. Its transmission ratio at each speed is elaborately worked out and adapted. The advantages of this transmission are as follows:

- Optimum working mode: the power output of the engine at different speeds can be utilized in a more rational way. In other words, the power potential can be brought into full play for a better economy. To meet drivers’ different requirements for economy and power, the DPS of Tiptronic 6-speed transmission can provide two gear shifting modes: i.e. a D-speed (standard version for fuel economy) and an S-speed (sporty version for dynamics). It is able to analyze driver’s requirement on its own and automatically decides on the speed to shift into.

- Self-learning function: with the help of the gear shifting self-learning function, less impact is produced during gear shifting and therefore the car drives more steadily.
- Safe locking function: the safe locking device for the gear-shifting bar effects its smooth locking function on the basis of speed change signal given by the engine control unit and on the driving speed signal. It prevents the gear-shifting bar from being inadvertently shifted into the driving position to cause an unexpected starting.
Emission and fuel consumption
The engine system for Polo Jinqing has been re-developed and EU IV standard is adopted for emission. Therefore it can more than satisfy the Chinese emission standard III. Besides, after re-development and re-adaptation, the fuel consumption of Polo Jinqing is further reduced. With the 1.4L engine, the fuel consumption at 90 km/h uniform speed is reduced by 13.8% at the maximum, and with 1.6 L engine, the same is reduced by 8.3% at the maximum. The manual transmission at 90 km/h uniform speed consumes fuel at the level of under 5 liters and the automatic transmission is only about 5.5 liters, to the great improvement of fuel economy.
